Weekly summary: 1/9/17-1/13/17

The moon and snow were the focus on our first week back at school after the break.  Tuesday, the children worked together to build a snow fort.

The rest of the week they watched the huge balls melt until eventually there were nothing but puddle.

Our poem this week:

Winter Moon

by Langston Hughes

How thin and sharp is the moon tonight!
How thin and sharp and ghostly white
Is the slim curved crook of the moon tonight!

At story time, I read from Moontellers: Myths of the Moon from Around the World by Lynn Moroney.

In conjunction with stories of the moon, the children are charting the phases of the moon at home each night. Now, we just need some clear nights so they can actually see the moon.

On Thursday afternoon, the children started reorganizing our bookshelves.  They worked to figure out how they are going to categorize the books on the shelves. They discovered this was a huge and difficult task.  So far only some of the chapter books have made it back on the shelves.
