Author Visit

Brynne Barnes, author of Colors of Me came to visit the first and second graders.

She read her book and had her audience participate by making hand gestures to go with the words.

I asked Brynne if she could bring in some of her drafts to show.  The children have been working on their own writing.  We have been discussing and trying to write drafts that will lead to final works. I thought it would be interesting for them to see how authors use this process.

Brynne brought in initial drafts of the book.  She explained that she and the illustrator never met each other.  The book's editor worked with her and Annika M. Nelson.  They would give their ideas and the editors would make suggestions.  They would make changes and the editor would make revisions.  They went back and forth until finally the final copy was made and the book was printed.

Brynne also read parts of her original poem that was six pages long.  She worked on it for 2 years before sending it to various publishers.  Her had work paid off.  She has gotten several book awards.

We were very lucky to have Brynne take time out of her busy schedule to spend time with our classes.  Thank you to Christine Hume who put us in contact with Brynne Barnes.
