Roman Houses

This week we have been looking at drawings of ancient Roman houses.  The children got in groups and compiled lists of features of the houses they saw in the drawings.  Some of the things they noticed were:

windows
indoor garden
zig zag designs
toilets
paintings on walls (frescos)
columns
tiles
shingles on the roof (actually clay tiles)

Then we looked at books that showed examples of the fresco and mosaics.

Today the children had the opportunity to make their own mosaics.

First they made the plaster and
spread it on their tiles

Then they chose small tiles,
mirrors, and treasures from
home.
The small tiles were placed
in the plaster.

The final results were gorgeous.  You will have to wait to see the masterpieces because we are going to use them at school before they can go home.

Thank you, Shlomit for helping with this project.  Next week, she will be helping us make frescos.  Personally, I can't wait.
